What is a 2-sink handwashing station?

A 2-sink handwashing station is a freestanding unit with 2 basins, 2 foot pumps, soap and paper towels. Two people can wash at once. A fresh water tank feeds the sinks, and used water drains to a separate grey tank inside. No hose, drain or power is needed.

Guests press a foot pedal and water flows. Hands never touch a faucet. That keeps the station cleaner through a long day.

It stands on its own, so you can place it near toilets, a food line or a work area.

How many handwashing stations do I need?

Our recommendation is 1 handwashing station for every 4 porta potties when food is served. A party with 1 to 4 toilets needs 1 station. An event with 5 to 8 toilets needs 2. Round up, and add one near each food line if the toilets are far from where people eat.

Handwashing stations by number of toilets (our recommendation, food served)
Toilets on siteStationsExample
1–41Backyard crawfish boil, 50–150 guests
5–82Church festival, 200–300 guests
9–123Large fair or cook-off
13–164Multi-day festival

Worked example: 150 guests, 6 hours, with a bar. That is 4 toilets plus 1 for alcohol, so 5 toilets. Five toilets round up to 2 handwashing stations.

A deluxe porta potty has a small sink built in. For a 1-unit backyard party, that can stand in for a station.

How big is a handwashing station?

A 2-sink handwashing station is about 56 inches tall, 30 inches wide and 35 inches deep. It weighs about 90 pounds empty and uses a tank of about 34 gallons for fresh and grey water. It fits through a normal gate. Exact model is confirmed on your quote.

Do food events need handwashing stations?

Food events should have at least 1 handwashing station, and our rule is 1 per 4 toilets. Sanitizer does not remove grease, sauce or dirt the way soap and water do. Cook-offs, crawfish boils, barbecues, church dinners and food truck rallies all go better with real sinks.

Your food or event permit may have its own handwashing rules. Check with the office that issues it. In Pasadena, the city's special event application asks how many portable restrooms you plan to have.

Place one station by the toilets and one near the serving line if the event is large. See special event restrooms and festival porta potties for full layouts.

What does OSHA say about handwashing on jobsites?

OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(f) says construction employers must provide adequate washing facilities for workers who apply paint, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or who handle other harmful contaminants. The facilities must be near the worksite. For farm work, 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers within a quarter-mile walk.

Read the full rule at OSHA 1926.51, Sanitation. Painting crews, roofers and plant turnaround crews are common renters.

On jobsites, set the station next to the toilets and the break area. Pair it with our construction site toilets and weekly service.

Where should the station go?

Put the handwashing station within a few steps of the toilets, on firm and level ground, and within about 15 feet of where our truck parks for refills. Keep it out of walkways and away from the food table splash zone. At about 30 inches wide, it fits most gates.

  • Face the pedals toward the open side so two people can stand at once.
  • Use shade in summer so water stays cooler.
  • Keep it level so the pumps work smoothly.
  • Give it a clear path for strollers and wheelchairs.

How is a handwashing station refilled?

Handwashing stations rented 7 days or more get weekly service included. The driver empties the grey water, refills about 34 gallons of fresh water, cleans the basins and restocks soap and paper towels. Event rentals of 1 to 3 days arrive full and usually need no visit. Busy sites can add visits.

Large crews may run a station low before the weekly visit. If that happens, add a second weekly service or a second station. Waste and grey water go only to authorized disposal sites.

Compare related units. Stations are usually rented with toilets.

Hand washing station questions

These hand washing station questions come from cook-off hosts, caterers, church groups and foremen. They cover price, water, soap and how many stations a crowd needs. Call 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, or send the quote form for an answer within 1 business hour.

How much is it to rent a hand washing sink for a day?

A 2-sink foot-pump station is about $150–$225 per event before tax, and the price is the same whether you keep it one day or three.

Do I need to hook it up to my water hose?

No. The station has its own fresh water tank and a grey water tank. We fill it before delivery.

Where does the dirty water go?

Into a closed grey tank inside the unit. We empty it on service visits or at pickup, so nothing drains onto your lawn.

Does it come with soap and paper towels?

Yes. Soap and paper towels come stocked. Put a trash can next to it for used towels.

Is hand sanitizer in the porta potty not enough for a crawfish boil?

Sanitizer helps, but it does not wash off grease and seasoning. For food events, we suggest 1 station per 4 toilets.

Is the water hot?

No. The station uses unheated water from its tank. In summer, shade keeps it from getting too warm.

Can I rent just a hand washing station without a porta potty?

Yes. Caterers and food vendors often rent stations alone when the venue already has restrooms.

How long will the water last with a crew of 30?

It depends on how often people wash. For crews that size, plan weekly service plus an extra visit, or a second station. We can adjust after the first week.
