How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 sets the legal minimum for construction sites. A crew of 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet. Larger crews need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and crews of 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers.
Table D-1 is the floor, not the target. It tells an inspector what must be on site. It does not say how clean those toilets will stay by Thursday.
| Number of employees | Minimum facilities (OSHA) |
|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
Read the full rule on the OSHA 1926.51 sanitation page. For a plain-English walk-through of Texas job sites, see our guide to OSHA portable toilet rules for Texas construction.
How many porta potties do we recommend per worker?
Pasadena Porta Potty Rentals recommends 1 standard unit for every 10 workers on a 40-hour week, with weekly service. That is stricter than the OSHA minimum on purpose. A standard unit is rated for about 200 uses between services, and a 10-person crew uses it roughly that much in five days.
Longer shifts, six-day weeks or summer heat push usage up. When that happens, add a second service visit each week instead of letting the tank fill.
| Crew size | OSHA minimum | Our recommendation | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | 1 toilet | 1 unit | Weekly |
| 11–20 | 1 toilet | 2 units | Weekly |
| 21–30 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 3 units | Weekly |
| 31–40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 4 units | Weekly or 2x/week |
| 41–60 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 5–6 units | 2x/week |
Run your own numbers with the crew calculator below. Change the crew size and shift length to see a unit count.
Event math: 1 standard unit per 50 guests for about 4 hours (common industry guideline), plus 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served. Public events: at least 5% wheelchair-accessible (2010 ADA Standards §213.2). Crew math: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 minimum, and our recommendation of 1 unit per 10 workers per 40-hour week with weekly service. Call to confirm for your site.

What happens during a weekly service visit?
A weekly service visit covers 5 jobs on every unit. Our driver pumps the tank, scrubs and sanitizes the seat, walls and floor, restocks at least 2 rolls of toilet paper and the sanitizer, and adds fresh deodorizing chemical. Service is included on every rental of 7 days or longer.
- Pump the tank. The truck hose empties waste into a sealed tank on the service truck.
- Add fresh chemical. Blue deodorizer goes into the clean tank with water to control odor.
- Clean and sanitize. Seat, urinal, door handle, walls and floor get scrubbed and sprayed.
- Restock supplies. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer are filled for the week ahead.
- Check the unit. The driver looks at the door latch, vent and level, and notes any damage.
Drivers need the unit within about 15 feet of where the truck can park. If materials or a dumpster block the path, the service can be missed, so keep that lane clear.
Do you have towable toilets for crews that move?
Towable porta potty trailers carry 1 or 2 standard units on a small trailer frame. Road crews, utility crews, fence builders and pipeline teams hitch the trailer to a work truck and move it as the job moves. Towable units are limited in number, so ask for one when you book.
A towable unit still gets weekly service. Tell us where the crew will be on service day, or park the trailer at a set spot that morning.
- Good for jobs that move more than a mile a week
- Saves calling us every time the crew relocates
- Unit stays upright and off the mud on the trailer deck

How does 28-day billing work on a job site?
Construction rentals bill on a 28-day cycle, not a calendar month. The first cycle includes a one-time delivery and pickup charge, and each cycle after that covers the unit plus 4 weekly service visits. Billing renews until you call for pickup and stops the day you request it.
A one-year job runs about 13 cycles, not 12. Pickup usually happens within 1–2 business days of your call. Approved commercial accounts can get invoicing; see the long-term rental page for a worked cycle example.
Where should the toilet go on a jobsite?
A jobsite toilet belongs on firm, level ground within about 15 feet of where our truck can park. The truck needs a clear lane about 10 feet wide with no low wires or branches. Keep the unit away from trench edges, crane swing paths and spots where runoff pools after rain.
- Set it near the main work area so the walk is short
- Face the door away from the street on residential lots
- On a slab-on-grade build, place it on the driveway apron, not soft fill
- Mark the spot with a cone or flag; nobody needs to be there

Our supplier didn't show up. Can you deliver today?
Same-day delivery is possible when you call by 12 p.m. (noon), Monday–Saturday, and your site is within about 25 miles of Pasadena. A truck must be open that day, and a rush fee may apply. Calls after noon usually get a first-load delivery the next morning.
Have the site address, gate code, crew size and the superintendent's cell ready. We give a delivery day, not a set hour, and the driver calls about 30 minutes before arrival. More detail is on our same-day delivery page.
What else do contractors rent with jobsite toilets?
Construction crews often pair job site toilets with 1 or 2 other services. Big plant jobs, long-term sites and hand washing needs each have their own page below, along with 3 guides written from questions contractors ask us on the phone.
Industrial portable restrooms
Plant turnarounds with large crews and 2x–3x weekly service.
Long-term rentals
How 28-day cycles work for jobs that last months.
Hand washing stations
Two-sink foot-pump stations for crews and break areas.

Construction porta potty questions
Contractors and home builders ask us the same 9 questions most often. The answers below cover crew counts, service days, billing, theft and moving units mid-job. Call (713) 980-2688 if your site has a rule or gate process we did not cover here.
How much is a porta john for a job site per month?
A standard job site unit starts at about $199 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. Your first cycle also carries a one-time trip charge of about $49–$99, set by how far the site is (both before tax).
I've got 25 guys on site. How many do I need?
OSHA's minimum for 25 workers is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal. We recommend 3 standard units with weekly service so the toilets stay usable all week.
What day of the week do you service?
Each site gets a set service day, Monday through Saturday. We try to match the day your crew is lightest or right before the weekend push.
Can you move the porter can to the other side of the lot?
Yes. Call us and we move it on the next service visit or schedule a separate trip. A separate trip may carry a trip fee, listed on your quote.
Do I need to be on site when you drop it off?
No. Mark the spot with a cone or flag and leave the gate open or give us the code. If your superintendent wants to meet the truck, the driver phones about 30 minutes out.
What if somebody tips it over or it gets stolen?
The contractor renting the unit covers loss, vandalism, fire or tipping beyond normal wear. Ask for a lock hasp on open sites and stake the unit in high wind.
Can you bill my company instead of a card each month?
Approved commercial accounts can get invoicing. Otherwise we take Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and debit.
Do you do the trailer kind that hooks to a truck?
Yes, we have a limited number of towable units with 1 or 2 toilets. Ask early so we can hold one for your start date.
How fast can you pick it up when we finish?
Pickup usually happens within 1–2 business days of your call. Billing stops the day you request pickup, not the day the truck arrives.
Prices shown are starting estimates before Texas sales tax. Your itemized quote is the final price.
