How many porta potties does a festival need?
A festival needs about 1 standard unit per 50 people for every 4 hours, then more for alcohol, food and accessibility. A crowd of 500 over 8 hours needs 15 base units. Add 1 unit per 4 for beer sales, at least 5% accessible units, and 1 hand wash station per 4 units where food is sold.
Count your peak crowd at one time, not total tickets sold across the day. A fair with 3,000 visitors that cycle through in waves may only hold 1,000 at once.
| Peak crowd | Base units | With alcohol | Accessible units (5%, min. 1 per cluster) | Hand wash (food served) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 | 9 | 12 | 1 | 3 |
| 500 | 15 | 19 | 1, and at least 1 per cluster | 5 |
| 1,000 | 30 | 38 | 2, and at least 1 per cluster | 10 |
The 1,000 row doubles the 500 row of our standard chart. Above that, call us for a site plan; our sizing guide shows the full method.

How many wheelchair-accessible units does a public event need?
Public events should make at least 5% of portable toilets wheelchair-accessible, and every cluster needs at least 1 accessible unit, under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. A 30-unit festival with 3 clusters needs at least 3 accessible units, 1 in each spot. Each accessible unit needs a 60-inch diameter turning space inside.
Our wheelchair-accessible (ADA-style) units are built to meet ADA dimensions per the manufacturer. Set them on the flattest, firmest ground in each cluster, with no curb or deep grass in the path.
How should we lay out restrooms at a festival?
Festival restrooms work best in 2 to 4 clusters spread across the grounds, so nobody walks more than a few minutes. Each cluster gets standard units, at least 1 accessible unit and hand wash stations at the ends. Every cluster also needs truck access within about 15 feet for service.
- Put one cluster near food and beer areas, where demand peaks
- Put one cluster near the main stage or finish line
- Face doors toward a wide walkway, not a fence line
- Keep a 10-foot truck lane open to every cluster during the event
- Light clusters for evening hours
- Add a lock hasp for overnight security on multi-day events
For races, place a large cluster at the start corral, where lines build before the start.
Can units be serviced during a multi-day festival?
Multi-day festivals get service between event days, usually in the early morning hours before gates open at 1 or more clusters. The driver pumps each tank, cleans and restocks the unit, and refills hand wash water. Service runs Monday through Saturday, so a Friday-to-Sunday festival gets a Saturday morning visit and should size up for Sunday.
A single-day event normally needs no service if units are sized right. Ask about pump-outs during the event itself for very large crowds; the truck needs a clear lane to reach each cluster.

What permits does a festival need for portable restrooms?
Festivals on City of Pasadena property file a special event application with Parks and Recreation at least 45 days ahead when they need special accommodations. The application asks how many portable restrooms you will have and the supplier's emergency contact. Other cities and Harris County venues have their own forms.
Download the Pasadena special event application packet. We give organizers a written unit count and our emergency contact for the form. See our permit and restroom guide for the steps.
Events on streets need right-of-way approval; call the City of Pasadena Permit Department at 713-475-5575 to confirm.
What kinds of large events do you supply?
Large event rentals cover any public gathering of a few hundred to a few thousand people. That includes fairs at venues like the Pasadena Fairgrounds, street festivals, 5K and 10K races, car shows, rodeos, cook-offs, school carnivals and holiday markets. Each one is sized by peak crowd, hours and food and drink sales.
- Fairs and rodeos
- Street festivals
- 5K and 10K races
- Cook-offs
- Car shows
- School carnivals
- Holiday markets
- Concerts in the park

What else do festival planners need?
Festival organizers usually need 3 or 4 rental types at once. These pages cover hand wash stations for food areas, restroom trailers for VIP tents and performers, seasonal event timing for fall fairs, and 1 guide on keeping units usable in Houston summer heat.

Festival and fair porta potty questions
Festival organizers, race directors and fair boards ask us these 9 questions most. The answers cover crowd math, accessible units, Sunday service, setup timing, street placement and cost per unit. Call (713) 980-2688 with your peak crowd, event hours and food plans to get a written layout.
We expect 2,000 people over the day. How many porta johns is that?
Start with your peak crowd at one time. If 1,000 are on the grounds at once for 8 hours, plan about 30 base units, plus more for alcohol and accessibility.
How many handicap porta potties do we need?
At least 5% of your units, and at least 1 in every cluster. Three clusters means at least 3 accessible units.
How much do festival porta potties cost per unit?
A standard event unit starts at about $175–$249, and a wheelchair-accessible unit at about $299–$375 per event. Hand wash stations start at about $150–$225. Festival quotes add tax on top of these estimates and list each unit type separately.
Our festival runs Friday through Sunday. Will you clean them Sunday?
We do not run on Sunday. We service Saturday morning before gates open and add extra units so the site lasts through Sunday.
When will you set up?
Large events are usually set 1–2 days before gates open. We give a delivery day, and the driver calls about 30 minutes ahead.
Can you put them on the street for our block festival?
Street placement needs city approval. Call the City of Pasadena Permit Department at 713-475-5575 first; we place on private property by default.
Can you fill out the restroom part of our city permit?
We give you the unit count, layout and our emergency contact in writing so you can complete the form.
Do you need power or water for the porta potties?
No. Standard units and hand wash stations need neither. Only restroom trailers need a 110V outlet and sometimes water.
Who's responsible if somebody tips one over?
The renter is responsible for damage beyond normal wear. Stake units in open fields and ask for lock hasps for overnight security.
