Event math: 1 standard unit per 50 guests for about 4 hours (common industry guideline), plus 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served. Public events: at least 5% wheelchair-accessible (2010 ADA Standards §213.2). Crew math: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 minimum, and our recommendation of 1 unit per 10 workers per 40-hour week with weekly service. Call to confirm for your site.
What assumptions does the porta potty calculator use?
The porta potty calculator assumes one standard unit serves about 50 guests at a 4-hour event, a common industry guideline. It adds 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served, at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit for public events, and 1 hand washing station per 4 units when food is served.
The calculator rounds up at every step. A half unit always becomes a whole unit, because a line at the door is worse than an extra unit. For crews, it uses our recommendation of 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service.
These numbers assume a standard unit with a toilet and urinal, rated for about 200 uses between services. Heavy heat, a mostly female crowd or a long line at the bar can push you one unit higher.
How many porta potties do you need for an event?
Event porta potty needs are based on guest count and hours. A 100-guest party running 4 hours needs 2 standard units. A 200-guest event running 6 hours needs 5 units. The chart below starts at 1 unit per 50 guests for 4 hours and grows as events run longer.
| Guests | Up to 2 hrs | 4 hrs | 6 hrs | 8 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| 150 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 300 | 3 | 6 | 8 | 9 |
| 500 | 5 | 10 | 13 | 15 |
Find your guest count, then read across to your event length. If you fall between two rows, use the higher row. For a backyard birthday, see our backyard party guide.
How many extra porta potties do you need when alcohol is served?
Events that serve alcohol need 1 extra porta potty for every 4 units on the chart, rounded up. Guests drinking beer or mixed drinks visit the restroom more often. A 150-guest, 6-hour wedding with a bar needs 4 units from the chart plus 1 for alcohol, for 5 units total.
| Event | Chart count | Alcohol add | Total units |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 guests, 4 hrs, beer cooler | 2 | 2 ÷ 4 = 0.5 → 1 | 3 |
| 150 guests, 6 hrs, open bar | 4 | 4 ÷ 4 = 1 | 5 |
| 200 guests, 8 hrs, open bar | 6 | 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 → 2 | 8 |
| 300 guests, 8 hrs, beer garden | 9 | 9 ÷ 4 = 2.25 → 3 | 12 |
How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties does a public event need?
A public event needs at least 1 wheelchair-accessible porta potty at each cluster of units, and 5% of all units should be accessible. That follows the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. A 10-unit festival in one cluster needs 1 accessible unit. Two clusters of 6 units need 2, one at each.
The accessible unit counts toward your total. It does not have to be extra. Swap one standard unit for a wheelchair-accessible (ADA-style) unit at each cluster.
| Setup | 5% of units | Clusters | Accessible units |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 units, one cluster | 0.5 → 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 12 units, two clusters of 6 | 0.6 → 1 | 2 | 2 (one per cluster) |
| 40 units, one cluster | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| 60 units, three clusters of 20 | 3 | 3 | 3 (one per cluster) |
An accessible unit needs a flat pad about 87 x 87 inches, with a 60-inch diameter turning space inside. Read the rule text on the U.S. Access Board's ADA Standards, section 213.
How many hand washing stations do you need?
Events that serve food need 1 hand washing station for every 4 porta potties, rounded up. That is our recommendation, not a law. A 6-unit event with a buffet needs 2 stations. Every standard unit already has a hand sanitizer dispenser, but soap and water work better before eating.
Place stations between the restrooms and the food line. A 2-sink station holds about 34 gallons of fresh water and serves two people at once. Read more about hand washing station rentals.
What does a full porta potty count look like for a large event?
A full porta potty count stacks every adjustment in order. A public 300-guest, 6-hour festival with beer and food needs 8 units from the chart, plus 2 for alcohol, for 10 total. One of those 10 is wheelchair-accessible. Food service adds 3 hand washing stations.
- Chart count. 300 guests at 6 hours = 8 standard units.
- Alcohol. 8 ÷ 4 = 2 more units. Running total: 10.
- Accessibility. 5% of 10 = 0.5, rounded up to 1. One cluster, so 1 accessible unit. Total stays 10 (9 standard + 1 accessible).
- Hand washing. 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5, rounded up to 3 stations.
- Final order. 9 standard units, 1 wheelchair-accessible unit, 3 hand washing stations.

How many porta potties does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(c) requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer construction workers. Crews of 20 or more need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Crews of 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. A standard unit has both a seat and a urinal.
| Number of workers | Minimum facilities |
|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 toilet |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
The rule does not apply to mobile crews with transportation readily available to nearby toilets. Read the full text at OSHA 1926.51, Sanitation. Our Texas construction rules guide covers the details.
What do OSHA rules require for farm crews?
OSHA rule 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 hand washing facility for every 20 farm workers, or fraction of 20. Both must sit within a quarter-mile walk of each worker. The rule covers farms with 11 or more hand laborers in the field on any given day.
Crews working in the field 3 hours or less in a day, counting travel, are exempt. A 30-person picking crew needs 2 toilets and 2 hand washing stations. Read the rule at OSHA 1928.110, Field Sanitation.
Why do we recommend more units than the OSHA minimum?
Our recommendation of 1 standard unit per 10 workers beats the OSHA minimum because a unit is rated for about 200 uses between services. Ten workers using one unit 4 times a day for 5 days reach about 200 uses, right when weekly service arrives. Forty workers would fill it in under two days.
| Crew size | OSHA minimum | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 toilet | 1 unit |
| 10 | 1 toilet | 1 unit |
| 20 | 1 toilet | 2 units |
| 40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 4 units |
| 60 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 6 units |
| 100 | 3 seats + 3 urinals | 10 units, or fewer with twice-weekly service |
Large crews can trade units for service visits. Doubling service to twice a week roughly doubles how many workers each unit can handle. Plant turnarounds along the Ship Channel often pair extra units with hand washing; see construction site toilets.
How does Houston heat change the porta potty count?
Houston heat raises porta potty use and odor, so summer counts often need one more unit or an extra service visit. The NWS normal July high at Houston Hobby is 92.9°F. Crews drinking more water use restrooms more, and heat speeds up waste breakdown inside the tank.
For summer jobs, plan service twice a week on busy sites. For outdoor events in June through September, round up one row on the chart. Our heat and servicing guide has more tips.

Porta potty sizing questions
These porta potty sizing questions come from the 174 calls we reviewed in 2025–2026. Callers most often asked how many units fit their guest list, whether they needed a handicap unit, and why companies quote different ratios. Each answer uses the same chart, adjustments and OSHA tables shown above on this page.
How many porta johns do I need for 75 people?
Use the 100-guest row: 75 people at a 4-hour party need 2 standard units. For 2 hours or less, 1 unit is enough. Add 1 more if you are serving alcohol.
Is one porta potty enough for a backyard party?
One standard unit covers about 50 guests for up to 4 hours. Most backyard parties we deliver to need just one. Past 4 hours, or with a bar, plan for two.
Why did another company tell me 1 per 100 guests?
Some companies quote a short-event ratio. One unit per 100 guests only works for events of about 2 hours or less. For a 4-hour event, 1 per 50 is closer to real use, and lines stay short.
Do I need a handicap porta potty for a private party?
Private home parties are not public events, so the ADA count does not apply. Still, if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, rent one wheelchair-accessible (ADA-style) unit. Expect about $299–$375 per event for that unit, before tax.
Should men and women have separate units?
You can split units by sign, but it is not required for private events. Women generally take longer per visit, so for a mostly female crowd, like a bridal shower, round up one unit.
How many porta potties for a crew of 25 roofers?
OSHA requires 1 seat and 1 urinal, which one standard unit covers. We recommend 3 units with weekly service, or 2 units with twice-weekly service, so the tank does not fill before the service truck arrives.
Does a food truck count as serving food?
Yes, any food served means guests should wash hands. Add 1 hand washing station per 4 porta potties, rounded up. With just 1 or 2 units, one station is enough.
What if more people show up than I planned?
Call us by noon, Monday–Saturday, and we can often add a unit the same day in our local zone, depending on truck availability. It is easier to book one extra up front.
Do kids count as guests?
Yes, count kids as full guests. Young children often need the restroom quickly and more often. For a kids' party, use your full headcount, parents included.
