How many porta potties does a backyard party need?
Most backyard parties need one porta potty. One standard unit serves about 50 guests for up to 4 hours. A 60-guest party of 4 hours needs 2 units. Parties longer than 4 hours, or with beer and mixed drinks, need more. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served, rounded up.
| Party | Units | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kids' birthday, 35 guests, 3 hours | 1 | Under 50 guests, under 4 hours |
| Graduation party, 45 guests, 6 hours | 2 | 50-guest row, 6-hour column |
| Family reunion, 90 guests, 4 hours | 2 | 100-guest row, 4-hour column |
| Cookout, 50 guests, 4 hours, beer | 2 | 1 from chart + 1 for alcohol |
Count kids as full guests. If your count falls between rows, use the higher row. The full chart is in our porta potty sizing guide.
Where should a porta potty go in a backyard?
A backyard porta potty should sit on firm, level ground about 15 feet from where the truck can park, so the service hose can reach. A standard unit is about 44 inches wide and weighs about 190 pounds empty. Your gate needs a 48-inch or wider opening for our crew to hand-place it.
- Flat grass, gravel, a patio or a driveway pad
- Away from the food table and grill
- Downwind of where guests sit, if you can
- In afternoon shade during summer
- Clear of low branches, wires and sprinkler heads
- Not on a slope, soft mud or over a septic tank lid

Measure the gate before you call. Callers in our log asked about gate width, slope and backyard vs curb more than almost any other setup topic. Our placement guide has more examples.
Should the porta potty go in the backyard or at the curb?
A driveway or side yard is often the easiest spot for a party porta potty, since the truck can reach it and service it without a gate. A backyard spot works if the gate is at least 48 inches wide and the path is firm. We place units on private property, not the street, by default.
Setting a unit in the street or right-of-way may need city approval. In Pasadena, call the City of Pasadena Permit Department at 1149 Ellsworth Dr, 713-475-5575, to confirm. If you live under an HOA, check its rules too.
When should you book a party porta potty?
Book a party porta potty at least 2 days ahead, and earlier for graduation or holiday weekends. Weekend parties are usually set up Friday and picked up Monday, and you are not billed for those extra days. If you forgot, calling by noon, Monday–Saturday, can still get same-day delivery in our local zone.
For a backyard party you get a set day rather than a set time. Drivers run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and call about 30 minutes before arriving. There is no Sunday delivery or pickup.
What does a backyard party porta potty cost?
A standard backyard party porta potty starts at about $175–$249 for a 1–3 day event, with delivery and pickup included inside our Pasadena zone. A hand washing station adds about $150–$225. Both figures are estimates and leave out the 8.25% sales tax.
| Unit | Starting estimate per event | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | About $175–$249 | Most backyard parties |
| Hand washing station, 2-sink | About $150–$225 | Parties with food |
| Deluxe flushing unit with sink | About $349–$475 | Showers, dressier parties |
| Wheelchair-accessible (ADA-style) | About $299–$375 | Guests using wheelchairs or walkers |

Do you need a hand washing station at a backyard party?
A hand washing station is a good idea at any backyard party that serves food. Our recommendation is 1 station for every 4 porta potties, rounded up, so a 1- or 2-unit party needs one. Each standard unit already has a hand sanitizer dispenser, but soap and running water help before eating.
A 2-sink station holds about 34 gallons of fresh water and uses foot pumps, so nobody touches a faucet. Place it between the restroom and the food. Learn more about hand washing station rentals.
How do you keep a party porta potty fresh?
A party porta potty stays fresh when it sits in shade, the door stays shut, and only toilet paper goes in the tank. Each unit arrives clean with 2+ rolls of toilet paper, hand sanitizer and deodorizing chemical. A standard unit is rated for about 200 uses, plenty for a 1-day party.
- Set out extra toilet paper rolls nearby.
- Put a small trash can outside the door, not inside.
- Ask guests not to drop wipes, diapers or bottles in the tank.
- Add a battery lantern outside for an evening party.
