What kinds of events do people rent porta potties for?

Special event porta potties cover any gathering where the house bathroom or building restrooms will not keep up. Common bookings include birthday parties, family reunions, church picnics, graduation parties, quinceañeras, cookouts, block parties and National Night Out, which Texas holds on the first Tuesday in October. Most of these events need just 1 or 2 units.

  • Backyard birthdays and graduation parties
  • Family reunions at a park pavilion or ranch
  • Church revivals, fish fries and fall festivals
  • Block parties and National Night Out street gatherings
  • Cook-offs, car shows and youth league award days

Weddings and large public festivals have their own planning needs. See our wedding restroom page and festival porta potty page for those.

How many porta potties do I need for my event?

One standard porta potty handles about 50 guests for a 4-hour event, a common industry guideline. Longer events need more units because people use the restroom more over time. A 100-guest party that runs 4 hours needs 2 units; the same party running 8 hours needs 3.

Adjust in whole steps: add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served (round up), and add 1 hand washing station per 4 units when food is served. Example: 150 guests, 6 hours, with a bar = 4 units + 1 = 5 units.

Event math: 1 standard unit per 50 guests for about 4 hours (common industry guideline), plus 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served. Public events: at least 5% wheelchair-accessible (2010 ADA Standards §213.2). Crew math: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 minimum, and our recommendation of 1 unit per 10 workers per 40-hour week with weekly service. Call to confirm for your site.

How does Friday delivery and Monday pickup work?

Friday delivery and Monday pickup is our normal plan for Saturday and Sunday events, at no extra day charge. Drivers run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., so the unit arrives sometime Friday and leaves sometime Monday. We give a delivery day, not an exact hour, and the driver calls about 30 minutes ahead.

Saturday delivery is also available if your space is not free on Friday. We do not deliver or pick up on Sunday, so a Sunday event still gets a Monday pickup.

  1. Book the date. Call or send the quote form with guests, hours and address.
  2. Mark the spot. Use a cone, flag or ribbon on firm, level ground.
  3. We drop it Friday. Nobody needs to be home; leave the gate unlocked or share the code.
  4. Enjoy the event. The unit has paper, sanitizer and deodorizer for the weekend.
  5. We pick it up Monday. Just leave it where it is and close the door.

Where should the porta potty go at a backyard party?

A backyard party unit belongs on firm, level ground within about 15 feet of where our truck can park. A standard unit is about 44 inches wide, so a backyard gate needs at least a 48-inch opening for hand placement. Most hosts place it at the side of the house, a short walk from the party.

Keep the door facing away from the food tables and the neighbor's windows. Our backyard party porta potty guide covers slopes, gates and night lighting.

Do I need a permit for an event in Pasadena?

A private party on your own property usually needs no restroom permit. Public events on Pasadena city property go through a special event application with Parks and Recreation, filed 45 or more days ahead when you need special accommodations. The form asks how many portable restrooms you will have and your supplier's emergency contact.

Download the City of Pasadena special event application packet. We can give you our unit count and emergency contact for the form. Our guide to Pasadena event permits and restrooms walks through it step by step.

Placing units on a street or right-of-way is different. Call the City of Pasadena Permit Department at 713-475-5575 to confirm; we place on private property by default.

When should I upgrade from a standard unit?

Upgrade from a standard unit when your guest list includes older relatives, a wheelchair user or a dressy crowd. A deluxe flushing unit adds a sink and mirror, and a wheelchair-accessible (ADA-style) unit has a ground-level floor, grab bars and a 60-inch turning space. Many hosts mix 1 upgraded unit with 1 standard.

What else should I add for a party or event?

Event hosts often compare 3 options before they book. These pages cover weddings and receptions, big public festivals and short rental lengths from 1 day to 2 weeks, plus 1 guide built from the questions we hear most from party hosts.

Party and event porta potty questions

Party hosts ask us these 9 questions more than any others. The answers cover cost, guest counts, delivery timing, smell and what to do after the party ends. Call (713) 980-2688 if your event has a detail we did not cover.

How much is it to rent a porta potty for a birthday party?

A standard event unit starts at about $175–$249 for 1–3 days, with delivery and pickup included inside our Pasadena delivery zone. Sales tax is added to that figure.

I'm having about 75 people for 5 hours. Is one enough?

Plan on 2 units. The chart puts 100 guests at 2 units for 4 hours and 3 for 6 hours, so 2 is the safe count for 75 guests over 5 hours.

Will it smell by Sunday?

Each unit has deodorizing chemical in the tank and a vent stack. Park it in shade if you can and keep the lid down; a 2–3 day party is fine without service.

Can you drop it off Thursday since I'm setting up early?

Yes. An extra day may be added to the quote, but we can deliver whatever weekday works for you.

Do I have to be home when you bring it?

No. Mark the spot, leave the gate unlocked or share the code, and the driver sets it in place.

We're doing National Night Out on a Tuesday. Can you do a weekday?

Yes. We deliver Monday through Saturday, so a Tuesday event can get Monday or Tuesday delivery and Wednesday pickup.

How much is the one with a sink for a church picnic?

A deluxe flushing unit with a sink starts at about $349–$475 per event. For a picnic with food, a 2-sink hand wash station adds about $150–$225. Both prices are before tax.

Does our church have to pay sales tax?

Not if your church is tax-exempt. Send us the exemption certificate with your booking.

What if it rains and we cancel?

A rained-out event can be cancelled free if you call more than a day before the truck rolls. Inside 24 hours a trip fee may apply; see our rental terms.

Prices shown are starting estimates before Texas sales tax. Your itemized quote is the final price.
