What is a standard porta potty, and who rents one?
A standard porta potty is a single-person portable toilet with a seat, a urinal, a vent stack and a hand sanitizer dispenser. It is the unit most of our customers rent. Crews, birthday parties, reunions and church cookouts use it because it is simple, sturdy and only about 44 inches wide.
People call it many names. We hear "porta john," "porter can," "job site toilet" and "port-a-potty" every week. They all mean the same basic unit.
It has no running water and no flush. Waste drops into a sealed tank with deodorizing chemical. That keeps the unit light, quick to place and easy to service.
How big and heavy is a standard porta potty?
A standard porta potty is about 92 inches tall, 44 inches wide and 47 inches deep. It weighs about 190 pounds empty and holds about 60 gallons of waste. Units in this class are rated for roughly 200 uses between services. Exact model is confirmed on your quote.
| Spec | Standard single unit | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Height | About 92 in (7 ft 8 in) | Check for low branches, carports and eaves. |
| Width | About 44 in | Needs a 48 in or wider gate for backyard placement. |
| Depth | About 47 in | Fits in a driveway corner or one parking space. |
| Empty weight | About 190 lb | Two people can move it a short way before use. |
| Waste tank | About 60 gal | Holds the waste plus deodorizing chemical. |
| Rated uses | About 200 between services | Guides how many units and how often we pump. |
| Class | PolyJohn PJN3 class | A common, proven jobsite and event design. |

What comes inside a standard unit?
Every standard porta potty arrives with 2 or more rolls of toilet paper, a hand sanitizer dispenser, deodorizing chemical in the tank, a urinal and a vent stack. The door locks from inside and shows an "occupied" sign. Nothing extra needs to be bought or set up by you.
- Toilet seat over a 60-gallon sealed tank
- Wall urinal for faster use at parties and jobsites
- Hand sanitizer dispenser, filled
- Two or more rolls of toilet paper
- Vent stack that pulls odor up and out
- Locking door with occupied indicator
There is no sink in a standard unit. If guests will be eating, add a 2-sink handwashing station. Or step up to the deluxe unit, which has a sink built in.

Will a standard porta potty fit through my gate or in my spot?
A standard porta potty needs a gate at least 48 inches wide for hand placement, since the unit is about 44 inches wide. The spot should be firm and level. It should sit within about 15 feet of where our truck parks, so the service hose can reach the tank.
| Check | Works | Call us first |
|---|---|---|
| Gate opening | 48 in or wider | Under 48 in, or a step or turn behind the gate |
| Ground | Firm, level grass, gravel, dirt or concrete | Soft mud, steep slope, loose sand |
| Truck reach | Within about 15 ft of a parking spot | Far back corner of a deep yard |
| Truck access | About 10 ft wide, no low wires or branches | Narrow alley, low carport, soft lawn path |
| Overhead | Clear above 8 ft | Low tree limbs or roof eaves |
Driveways are the easiest choice. For more layouts, read our porta potty placement guide. Nobody needs to be home on delivery day. A cone, flag or ribbon on the spot is enough for the driver.
How many standard units do I need?
One standard unit covers about 50 guests for a 4-hour event, a common industry guideline. A 100-guest party running 4 hours needs 2 units. For jobsites, we recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service. OSHA sets the legal minimum for construction.
Add 1 unit for every 4 units if alcohol is served. Longer events need more units, too. The full chart, with 2- to 8-hour columns, is in our guide to how many porta potties you need.
For crews, the OSHA rule is in 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. Twenty or fewer workers need at least 1 toilet. Our 1-per-10 advice keeps lines short and the tank from filling early.
How is a standard unit cleaned on a longer rental?
Standard units rented for 7 days or longer get weekly service included. On each visit, the standard unit gets pumped, sanitized inside, restocked with paper and sanitizer, and recharged with chemical. Event rentals of 1 to 3 days arrive clean and stocked and normally need no service visit.
Big crews can add a second weekly visit. In summer heat, extra service helps with odor. Long-term rentals bill on a 28-day cycle until you call for pickup. See construction site toilets for crew setups.
Who is a standard porta potty the wrong choice for?
A standard porta potty is the wrong pick in 4 cases: a guest uses a wheelchair, guests expect a sink and flush, the event is formal and indoor-style, or food is served with no handwashing nearby. Each case has a better unit, and you can mix units in one order.
- Wheelchair users or public events: rent a wheelchair-accessible (ADA-style) unit with a ground-level floor.
- Guests want a sink: the deluxe flushing unit has a foot-pump sink and mirror.
- Formal weddings: a restroom trailer gives lights, flushing toilets and A/C.
- Food lines: add a handwashing station, about 1 for every 4 toilets.
How does renting a standard unit work?
Renting a standard porta potty takes 5 steps: call or send a quote form, confirm the itemized price, mark the spot, take delivery, then call for pickup. Expect a call from the driver roughly half an hour before arrival. Drivers run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and we give a delivery day, not an exact hour.
- Tell us the basics. Address, dates, guest count or crew size.
- Get an itemized quote. Unit, days, delivery, pickup, service and tax are listed.
- Mark the spot. Use a cone or flag. Leave the gate unlocked or share the code.
- We deliver. The unit arrives clean, stocked and ready.
- We pick up. Weekend events usually get Monday pickup at no extra day charge.
Compare other units. The deluxe unit adds a sink and flush. The wheelchair-accessible unit adds room and grab bars. A handwashing station adds 2 sinks for food events.

Standard porta potty questions
These are the standard porta potty questions callers ask most, in their own words. They cover cost, supplies, smell, locks and how long one unit lasts. If your question is not here, call during dispatch hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, for a live answer.
How much is a regular porta potty for a weekend party?
A standard unit for a 1–3 day event starts from about $175–$249, with delivery and pickup included inside our Pasadena delivery zone, tax not included.
What does a porta john cost for a job site by the month?
A construction unit starts from about $199 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. Just the first cycle adds a one-time trip charge, roughly $49–$99 depending on distance. Tax is extra on both.
How many people can use one porta potty before it's full?
A standard unit is rated for about 200 uses between services. For a party, plan about 1 unit per 50 guests for 4 hours. Longer events or a bar mean more units.
Does it come with toilet paper and hand sanitizer?
Yes. Every unit arrives with 2 or more rolls of toilet paper and a filled hand sanitizer dispenser. For long parties, keep a few spare rolls in the house.
Is the porter can going to stink up my yard?
The tank has deodorizing chemical and the vent stack pulls odor up and out. Placing the unit in shade and away from the food table helps a lot in Texas heat.
Can you set it on my grass?
Yes, if the grass is firm and level. Soft, soggy ground after heavy rain can let the unit lean, so a driveway or patio edge may be safer that week.
Can I lock it at night so people don't use it?
Yes. Ask for a lock hasp when you book. We suggest one for public or overnight jobsites, since renters are responsible for vandalism or tipping.
What if someone knocks it over?
Call us so we can clean up and swap the unit. Damage beyond normal wear, such as fire, vandalism, tipping or loss, is billed to the renter. Our rental terms explain the details.
Can I get just one for a Sunday birthday party?
Yes. We are closed Sunday, so we deliver Friday and pick up Monday at no extra day charge. Saturday delivery is also available.
