How hot does it get in the Pasadena and Houston area?
The Pasadena and Houston area gets hot and humid from late spring into fall. The National Weather Service normal July high at Houston Hobby Airport is 92.9°F, and humid air makes it feel hotter. A plastic porta potty sitting in full sun warms up fast inside, especially in the afternoon.
You can check daily forecasts and heat advisories from the NWS Houston/Galveston office. Heat advisory days are a good time to check your units and ask about extra service.
Why do porta potties smell worse in the heat?
Porta potties smell worse in the heat because warm waste breaks down faster and releases more odor. The deodorizing chemical in the tank works hardest in a cool, lightly used unit. In 90°F-plus weather with heavy use, a tank near its roughly 60-gallon capacity smells much sooner than in spring.
Three things fight odor in summer: shade, more frequent pumping and not overloading a unit. The vent stack on each standard unit also helps pull air out, so keep it clear of branches and tarps.

How often should a porta potty be serviced in summer?
A porta potty should be serviced at least weekly in summer, and twice a week on busy sites. In Houston heat, think of a standard unit as good for roughly 200 uses before it needs a pump-out. Ten workers using one unit 4 times a day for 5 days reach about 200 uses. Fifteen workers reach about 300 uses.
| Workers per unit | Uses per week | Service plan |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | ~100 | Weekly (included) |
| 10 | ~200 | Weekly (included); at the rating |
| 15 | ~300 | Twice a week, or add a unit |
| 20 | ~400 | Twice a week plus a unit, or 2 units |
A summer service visit means a full pump-out, a sanitizing wipe-down, fresh paper and sanitizer, and a new dose of deodorizing chemical. Extra visits are itemized on your quote. Learn how billing works on our long-term rental page.
Where should a porta potty go in the summer heat?
A summer porta potty should go in afternoon shade on firm, level ground within about 15 feet of where the service truck parks. The east side of a building or a tree line gets shade after noon. Keep the vent stack clear and leave space around the unit so air can move.
- Shade from a building, trailer or tree line, not under low branches
- Off dark asphalt when grass or gravel is nearby
- Away from break areas and food tables
- Still reachable by the truck every service day
Our placement guide covers gates, slopes and truck access.
How does heat change porta potty use on job sites?
Heat raises porta potty use on job sites because crews drink more water. OSHA's heat safety guidance tells employers to provide water, rest and shade, and more water means more restroom trips. On a summer crew, plan at least 1 standard unit per 10 workers with weekly service, and add visits as needed.
Read OSHA's guidance at OSHA Heat Exposure. The toilet minimums under OSHA 1926.51 do not change in summer, but real use does. See construction site toilets for crew setups.
How should summer events plan for heat?
Summer events should round up one row on our sizing chart, place units in shade, and add a hand washing station when food is served. A 100-guest, 4-hour July party would move from 2 units to 3. For formal events, a restroom trailer with A/C keeps guests cooler.
Event rentals of 1–3 days arrive clean and stocked and normally need no service visit. For all-day festivals, ask about a mid-event service. Our sizing guide shows the full chart, and our restroom trailer page covers A/C units.
What does extra summer service cost?
A standard long-term unit starts at about $199 per 28-day cycle with weekly service included. A second weekly visit adds cost as its own quote line. Adding a second unit is the other way to handle heavy use. These are estimates before the 8.25% sales tax.
Ask us to price both options for your crew size. For June-to-September projects, see our seasonal rentals.
